Muskegon Heights High School is located near the center of the Muskegon Heights business district.

 CURRICULUM
Course offerings reflect a comprehensive curriculum in English, math, social studies, science and a foreign language, which enables students to pursue post-secondary education, a career in military service, or to enter the world of employment.

GRADUATES
Class of 2007- 60% of Muskegon Heights’ graduates applied to attend either two-year (40%) or four-year (20%) degree granting institutions.

GRADING SYSTEM
Beginning in the fall of 2004, Muskegon Heights High School changed to trimester (three terms per year). As a result of the change, graduation requirements increased. There was also a transition from “1” credit to “1/2” credit per course completion.  Each student has the capability to earn “2.5” (five classes per day) credits per trimester or “7.5” credits per year.

The Muskegon Area Career Tech Center program which consists of twenty career areas, is an option for 11th or 12th grade students. They must take all three terms and earn 4.5 credits per year.

TESING INFORMATON

The MEAP (Michigan Educational Assessment Program) for Social Studies is administered to 9th grade students in the fall of each year. The test includes history, geography, civics and economic items
.
The PLAN is a standardized test administered to sophomores as an early start in planning and preparing for post-secondary education and to prepare for the ACT Assessment or other national tests.

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is the test juniors must take in order to meet the first qualifier for the National Merit Exam. It assesses skills and knowledge learned during the first three years of a student’s high school education.  It is recommended that each junior take this test.

The Michigan Merit Examination (MME)
The MME replaced the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) High School Test beginning in spring 2007.  The MME is administered to 11th grade students in the spring and is based on the ACT plus writing college entrance exam, WorkKeys – an ACT work skills assessment, plus several Michigan components developed to assess Michigan curriculum not assessed by the ACT Plus Writing College entrance Exam or WorkKeys assessments.

The ACT (American College Test) and the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) are tests juniors and seniors take in order to enroll in a four year college or university. Each junior takes this assessment in the spring (usually in March) of their junior year.   A senior can also test in early fall of the senior year in an effort to earn a higher score.
 
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is an assessment administered by the military and reflects aptitudes in academic and occupational areas.  The scores relate to both military and careers and can be helpful in evaluating student’s changes for success in various areas.

The Michigan Promise Scholarship

To qualify to receive Michigan Promise scholarship funds, students must meet or exceed MME scores in mathematics, reading, writing and science.
