An interview was done with four students (two at a time) at the Academy asking questions such as: How do they feel about the Academy? Are there any changes they would make? What does their day consist of? Here is how it went:
|
Interviewed - J’Ana Love-Tunstull and Keyonna Billings
What are one or two words the both of you would use to describe the Math and Science Academy?
J’ana said “Adventurous and challenging”
Keyonna said “Challenging and exciting”
What would a typical day at the academy would be like?
They replied: “First we have science, it has a lot of hands-on activities and projects dealing with the earth and the ecosystem.” Next, they have math, they said, “It’s challenging”. After that, they have English, which involves a lot of writing, but they are able to take their time and it requires thinking. Following this class is Social Studies; the two girls said that, “It teaches us responsibility”. One example they gave me, in which the Social studies class teaches them responsibility, was that they did a “mock court” demonstration in which they pretended to handle a court case involving real life matters that may come up in an actual court. They found this activity to be a “good experience”. Moving right along, they have a technology class in which they participate in interactive activities and educational websites on the computer using programs such as Study Island, which they said was “hard and challenging”, and Micro Type Pro. Micro Type Pro is a keyboarding program that consists of a tutorial, reinforcement activities, educational games, and a word processor. Study Island is a web-based program to help prepare our students for the state standardized tests.
What would you add or take away from the academy?
J’ana said: “More association with other grades, all grades, instead of it being split up in half”.
Keyonna said: “More free time, just kidding, I personally wouldn't take away anything I really enjoy it!” J’ana agreed.

Without hesitation, both William and Austin said, “Playing basketball almost everyday, free time on Postopia, Fun brain and Poptropica these are fun educational math games, and we get to do missions.” Postopia is a fun site for kids. Kids can play games, explore, discover, and create - all in a fun, digital way! Pop tropica/FunBrain is the Internet's premier location for interactive, educational games (math, grammar, science). It’s the #1 site for educational games for children and kids of all ages.
What would be a typical day be like?
“First we have science, nice teacher; she tells us when we have done a good job a lot. Next is math, ‘Most fun class’. After that is ELA- English language arts, ‘I like it’”. Then there’s Social Studies, “This is a fun class, we are learning about the Core Democratic Values, we are doing a mock court, and role play. After that is the tech class, ‘I like it’”. Lastly there is Zero hour, they view it as “a special time”, in which, and they have the opportunity of participating in health, art, swimming, or gym.
What makes the academy different from going to a different school?
They both agreed that when attending the academy, “the day seems quicker being at the academy and exciting not boring”.
(End of Interview) |
The students are able to get school materials all day. They have a store to buy candy after school. Some programs that they enjoy would be, Study Island, Fun brain, and Virtual Surgery, “exciting”, one student mentioned. They have experiments, switch classes, which they believe prepares them for Middle school, and they have a school paper and bake sales that they are involved in. |
