2007/2008 Points of Pride
 
 
  • Whitney Dye and Anton Keys earned financial rewards for college through their performance on the Michigan Merit Exam.

  • Nine students went to Lansing to participate in the Youth in Government program with advisor Mr. Ohan.  These students were involved in a law creation simulation involving adoption of a standardized national history textbook and were awarded the highest possible honor when their bill was passed into law.
  • In athletics,
           
    -Steve Winston was recently selected McDonald’s
    Scholar Athlete of the week

    -In football, Steve Winston, Kyle Jackson, Kenny McDaniel and DeQuante’ Caviness were selected 1st team all area with Steve Winston going on to earn 1st team all state honors and a full ride football scholarship to Central Michigan University.  Kyle Jackson and Jarvis Briggs earned football scholarships to Michigan Tech.

    -Marquis Brewer was honored as 1st team all state for his basketball abilities.

  • The students are excited about the super bright new lights in the John E. Sydnor Gymnasium.  They say it feels like an NBA facility.

  • Our biology and chemistry classes were given the opportunity to conduct numerous experiments using high tech science equipment as they enjoyed some exciting hands-on experiences while participating in the REAL Science program sponsored by the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District . 

  • 2007/2008 saw the resurrection of an actual debate team at MHHS after a forty year absence.  We became part of the OK Gold league centered in Grand Rapids and competed with schools from throughout West Michigan with the topic of U.S. public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa.  Our team, with advisor Ms. Roy, participated as an extra-curricular club against many teams that are actual classes yet in this first year out, the team won seven debates with Quincy Booker, Carmen Wheeler, Monique Jack, Omar Stewart, Landon Rainey, Tyrone Rufus, Latina Jackson and Michael Newson all being involved in wins.  Additionally, Landon and Tyrone were recognized for outstanding speaking skills, with Tyrone being in the top 15 as determined by speaker points awarded.  The success of this team has resulted in debate being offered as an elective course for 2008/2009. The topic for next year will be increasing alternative energy incentives.

  • Much attention from the Muskegon Chronicle  and an invitation to Grand Haven Public Schools  resulted from Mr. Ohan’s classes as they performed in mock trials they prepared for by researching case studies and relating issues they found to cartoon characters. 

  • Kyla Brooks, Kalee Cook, and Jarvay Robertson were featured in a local television promotion to encourage students to stay in school.
