Probationary Teacher Support Program

The Muskegon Heights Public Schools have vigorously followed state mandates to ensure that only highly qualified teaching candidates are employed and that novice teachers are provided with the support necessary to speed their development into master teachers. The following measures are in place to make this a reality:

  • In order to be employed by the district, new instructors must be determined to be not only certified but highly qualified for their assignment.

  • Novice teachers are supported in their first three years of teaching by a master teacher who serves as their mentor. Mentor teachers must be in good standing and have seven or more successful years of teaching experience.

  • Probationary teachers (novice and experienced) are provided monthly district-wide professional development sessions held by the mentor coordinator.

  • In each of their first three years of teaching novice teachers receive five days of intensive professional development tailored to the individual teacher’s development plan.

  • Probationary teachers receive four years of intense supervision with no fewer that three performance observations and evaluations each year.
