Attention Veterans!

If you're a veteran looking for a job (or a better job) in Michigan, see your Veterans Employment Specialist at any Michigan Works! Service Center, or call 1-800-455-5228 and ask to speak to a Veterans Employment specialist. Your Veterans Employment Specialist is a veteran helping fellow veterans find work, build career skills, and access state and federal veterans' services. At approximately 100 Michigan Works! Service Centers statewide, these specialists are ready to help you with knowledge of the local job market and direct access to state and federal resources.

Personalized service

At your local Michigan Works Service Center, your Veterans Employment Specialist will listen to you, ask questions, and help you put together a detailed, aggressive action plan. The plan will be designed with you in charge, to help you meet your goals as quickly as possible - whether your goal is finding a job, upgrading to a better job, or resolving a specific problem that affects your ability to work. Your Veterans Employment Specialist knows the entire "menu" of state and federal services available to veterans and how these services can help you. And the same Veteran Employment Specialist will work with you each time you contact your Michigan Works! Service Center.

Employment priority for veterans

As one of the veterans' benefits you've earned, you receive priority service. Our system allows Veterans Employment Specialist to access jobs first and refer veterans before the jobs are available to the general public. Employers who have contracts with the federal government also have responsibility to give veterans preference in hiring under federal law.

Job searches

In addition to using the Michigan Career Portal at www.michigan.gov/careers, local job postings, and other resources, your Veterans Employment Specialist will use personal knowledge of the local job market to aggressively "go looking" for new or upcoming job opportunities by contacting employers on your behalf.

Career exploration and planning

You may have other needs that affect your chances of finding a job. Your Veterans Employment Specialist will network on your behalf with agencies and organizations to obtain services. These may include unemployment benefits, health services, living expenses, transportation, training, adaptive equipment, employer accommodations for veterans with disabilities, and others. Also, you can get help with resume preparation, interview skills, bonding, or resolving problems.

On-the-job training opportunities

Your Veterans Employment Representative may refer you to an employer program. Each training program has specific eligibility requirements, and your Veterans Employment Representative will work with you to find available opportunities that best fit your own needs and qualifications.
